Headaches and Facial Pain

Yakima TMJ Dentist

Headaches and Facial Pain are two of the most common symptoms of TMJ dysfunction or bite problems. TMJ headaches are a type of tension headache and are often described as feeling like you are wearing a very tight hat that is two sizes too small. With a TMJ headache, the muscles in the head and face are constantly contracting to reposition the uncomfortable bite and this causes a feeling of pressure and tightness which reduces blood flow in the area. The body then pumps even more blood to the area which causes even more unbearable pressure.

These headaches can be so frequent and so painful that they are debilitating and take a lot of the joy out of life. The pain can be masked with medication but the underlying cause of the pain – a bad bite or malocclusion – will remain! Neuromuscular Dentistry establishes the ideal bite so the muscles are happy because they are no longer working and straining to position teeth that are in a bad bite relationship. Relaxed, happy muscles allow the temporomandibular joint to slip back into alignment and remain in an optimal position. The end result: mo more headaches!

Facial pain is another symptom of TMJ Disorder. When a patient has a bad bite and a misaligned jaw joint, the muscles and nerves of the face are affected and may become strained or spasm as a result. Neuromuscular Dentistry establishes the ideal bite where the muscles are happy and muscle strain and spasm and pain are eliminated.

Neuromuscular Dentistry can relieve headache and facial pain by addressing the CAUSE of the pain: a "bad bite!" When your bite is right, the teeth, muscles and joints all work together without strain.
